Whale shark watching in Oslob, Cebu is an incredible experience that any ocean lover or adventure seeker should add to their bucket list. I recently had the opportunity to visit this stunning destination and witness these gentle giants up close. In this blog post, I will share my experience at the Butanding (local term for whale shark) interaction site in Oslob and provide useful information for anyone planning to visit. Oslob is a small coastal town located in the southern part of Cebu Island. It is famous for its whale shark watching activities, where visitors can swim and interact with the gentle giants. As a nature lover, I was ecstatic to experience this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. After researching and reading reviews, I decided to book a trip with a reputable tour company that offered a sustainable and responsible whale shark watching experience.
The day started early as we had to leave the hotel at 5:00 am to avoid the crowds and maximize our chances of seeing the whale sharks. After a two-hour drive from our hotel in Cebu City, we arrived in Oslob and headed straight to the briefing center. Here, we were given an orientation on how to interact with the whale sharks responsibly and safely. The local government has strict guidelines in place to ensure the protection and conservation of the whale sharks. Visitors are required to wear life vests and not touch the whale sharks, among other rules.
After the briefing, we were assigned a boat and a guide. The boat ride to the interaction site took around 15 minutes. The water was calm and clear, and I could see schools of fish swimming underneath us. As we approached the site, I could see the dorsal fins of the whale sharks breaking the surface of the water. My heart was racing with excitement as I put on my snorkeling gear and jumped into the water.
The first thing that struck me was the sheer size of the whale sharks. They can grow up to 12 meters in length and weigh up to 21 tons. Despite their size, they are incredibly graceful and gentle creatures. As I swam closer to one, I was in awe of its beautiful spotted skin and the way it effortlessly glided through the water. I could see its huge mouth, which can reach up to 1.5 meters wide, as it filtered the water for plankton. It was a humbling experience to be in the presence of such magnificent creatures.
My guide and I followed the whale sharks for around 30 minutes, taking care not to get too close or disturb them in any way. I was amazed by their calm and peaceful nature, and it was clear that they were not bothered by our presence. It was truly a magical experience to swim alongside them and witness their majesty up close.
After our time with the whale sharks was over, we headed back to the briefing center where we were treated to a delicious breakfast. I felt grateful for the opportunity to have this unforgettable experience while also knowing that the local government and tour operators are committed to preserving and protecting the whale sharks and their habitat.
In conclusion, whale shark watching in Oslob, Cebu is an experience that should be on every nature lover’s bucket list. It is an incredible opportunity to witness the beauty and grace of these gentle giants up close while also supporting responsible and sustainable tourism practices. I highly recommend doing your research and booking with a reputable tour operator to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for both you and the whale sharks.
